{"id":10983,"date":"2025-03-05T09:12:22","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T08:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/?p=10983"},"modified":"2025-04-16T09:41:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T08:41:00","slug":"web-portals-reduced-king-milan-square-in-nis-by-several-thousand-square-meters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/web-portals-reduced-king-milan-square-in-nis-by-several-thousand-square-meters\/","title":{"rendered":"Web Portals Reduced King Milan Square in Nis by Several Thousand Square Meters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fakenews.rs\/2025\/03\/03\/trg-kralja-milana-trg-sintagma-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><em>Original article<\/em><\/a><em> (in Serbian) was published on 3\/3\/2024; Author: Aleksa \u0106iri\u0107<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Several Serbian web portals covered the estimates of those gathered at the \u201c<strong>Student edict<\/strong>\u201d protest in Nis on 1 March, specifically addressing claims that there were <strong>200,000 demonstrators <\/strong>in Nis. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/c3fgl\">Alo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/UNww6\">B92<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/n5jvZ\">Srbija danas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/oaDE6\">Novosti<\/a> shared a photo from a post on the Telegram channel <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/S1g7V\">Istocna buducnost<\/a>, showing a massive protest in <strong>Athens<\/strong>. A section of the protest is circled, which, according to the author, represents \u201c<strong>the size of the square in Nis compared to Athens<\/strong>\u201d. However, the circled area is <strong>significantly smaller<\/strong> than the actual area of King Milan Square in Nis.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although FN Tragac is not in a position to provide an estimate of the number of people present at the protest in Nis, we draw attention to the manipulations by certain media outlets that, through comparisons with protests in Athens, attempted to <strong>downplay the number of attendees in Nis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" src=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Istocna-buducnost.png\" alt=\"Post in Telegram channel &quot;Isto\u010dna Budu\u0107nost&quot; \n\n\" class=\"wp-image-10984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Istocna-buducnost.png 750w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Istocna-buducnost-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Telegram channel \u201cIstocna buducnost\u201d, followed by tabloids, published a collage made up of two identical photos of Athens&#8217; central <strong>Syntagma Square<\/strong>, showing a large crowd. The only difference between the photos in the collage is that the right side has a circled section <strong>meant to represent the dimensions of King Milan Square in Nis<\/strong>. \u201cIn the photo on the left, we see Athens and, according to objective estimates, around 200,000 people at the protest. On the image to the right, we can see the size of the square in Nis is circled in comparison to Athens\u201d, the channel claims, as reported by the tabloids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the crowd estimation tool MapChecking <strong>does not agree<\/strong> with the \u201cevidence\u201d provided by the media and the channel. According to this tool, the area of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapchecking.com\/#ceNpjYDhgf8dD1-ml5npHBoYFjoeA7O1A9m4gvR5IbwHSN7XWO24F0k-01ztuRqKfA2l1T10nBp31jppAWh3IZ_LSdRIE0hFA-i9QH4g-CqQ9gfRGIO0ApNmAtCmQLgaaPxOobwGQPgs0by-QPg6ktwBpAJC7NsM\">King Milan Square<\/a> is slightly less than <strong>12,000 square meters<\/strong>. On the other hand, the circled area of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapchecking.com\/#bAADAP97mF0IP471BAACQQWLnF0J-4r1BeOcXQlHjvUE25hdCyuK9QUvmF0Lb4b1B\">Syntagma Square<\/a> section in Athens in the photo from the tabloids and Telegram is about <strong>4,800 square meters<\/strong>. Therefore, the claim that the right-side photo of Syntagma represents the size of the central square in Nis is <strong>not true<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ilustracija-Sintagma-Nis-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ilustracija-Sintagma-Nis-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ilustracija-Sintagma-Nis-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ilustracija-Sintagma-Nis-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ilustracija-Sintagma-Nis-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ilustracija-Sintagma-Nis.png 1355w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If we assume, in the case of Nis, that there were <strong>1.5 people per square meter<\/strong> at King Milan Square during the protest (and the density was almost certainly higher at certain moments), the result is that about <strong>17,000 people<\/strong> could have gathered there. When it comes to the section of Syntagma Square in Athens that is circled in the photo on Telegram, the estimated number of people using the same principle is about<strong> 7,200<\/strong> (although, in this case, too, the crowd density was almost certainly higher).
