Netanyahu had <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/75sIi9lvVkg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">proposed<\/a> that U.S. President Donald Trump receive the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the Second World War, courts established by the United Nations have issued genocide convictions in three cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda <a href=\"https:\/\/unictr.irmct.org\/en\/genocide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">defin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/unictr.irmct.org\/en\/genocide\">ed<\/a> as genocide the killing of between 800,000 and one million members of the Tutsi ethnic group and moderate Hutus, carried out by Hutu extremists between April and July 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icty.org\/x\/cases\/mladic\/cis\/en\/cis_mladic_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ratko Mladi\u0107<\/a>, then commander of the main staff of the Army of Republika Srpska, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icty.org\/en\/press\/statement-of-the-office-of-the-prosecutor-on-the-conviction-of-radovan-karadzic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Radovan Karad\u017ei\u0107<\/a>, then president of that Bosnian-Herzegovinian entity, were sentenced by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to life imprisonment for crimes including the genocide of more than 8,000 Bosniaks in Srebrenica in July 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tribunal for Cambodia, established by the country\u2019s authorities in cooperation with the United Nations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eccc.gov.kh\/en\/cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">classified<\/a> as genocide the mass killings carried out between 1975 and 1979 by members of the then-ruling Communist Party, the Khmer Rouge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 7 October 2023, Israel launched a military offensive in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/node\/204176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Gaza Strip<\/a> in response to an incursion by armed groups from Gaza, a Palestinian enclave under Israeli blockade. On 21 November of the same year, the International Criminal Court issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/defendant\/netanyahu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">arrest warrant<\/a> for Netanyahu on reasonable suspicion of responsibility for war crimes in Gaza. He was not charged with the crime of genocide in that proceeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 29 December 2023, South Africa initiated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/case\/192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">proceedings<\/a> against Israel before the International Court of Justice, accusing it of violating the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An independent United Nations commission on human rights stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/hrbodies\/hrcouncil\/sessions-regular\/session60\/advance-version\/a-hrc-60-crp-3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">report<\/a> published on September 16 this year that \u201cIsraeli authorities and Israeli security forces have the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to our inquiry, Marke\u0161 described his statement as a slip of the tongue, explaining that he should have said \u201cthis is at least the fourth genocide since the Second World War.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We characterize Marke\u0161\u2019s claim that Netanyahu is accused of committing the first genocide since the Second World War as a reckless mistake, since the author of the statement clarified that he made a mistake.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Original article (in Slovenian) was published on 29\/10\/2025; Author: Antun Kataleni\u0107 Courts established by the United Nations have so far issued convictions for genocide in Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Cambodia.
