However, neither that post nor an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressreader.com\/uk\/The-i-paper\/20251024\/281792815255800?srsltid=AfmBOooom3MtnJg4VxeAlF9lj-_no-SB6Pa_2bDLpcVZUGtEV27QOToJ\">article<\/a> about Starmer\u2019s trip to Brighton claims that those who refuse digital ID would have to pay the 85-pound fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prime Minister\u2019s office shared footage with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/fact-check\/britons-without-digital-id-will-not-have-pay-85-pounds-prove-their-identity-2025-10-30\/\">Reuters<\/a> showing Starmer interacting with journalists. It began with Starmer recalling the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/1981618379850228183\">experience<\/a> of a couple he had spoken to earlier, who, when buying a house, had paid for their identity to be verified for a mortgage application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTheir advisors had subcontracted the digital checks to a private company, so she and her husband had to pay 85 pounds each to verify who they were,\u201d <\/em>Starmer said in the 13-minute video. <em>\u201cSo, it cost them 170 pounds to check their identity. Digital identity on their phone would have removed all that hassle.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When announcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/britain-introduce-mandatory-digital-id-cards-2025-09-26\/\">digital identity policy<\/a>, Starmer said it would only be mandatory for those who needed to verify their right to work in the UK.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Starmer did not claim that people without a digital ID card would have to pay an 85-pound fee for refusing it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was referring to a case he had mentioned earlier, where two individuals each paid this amount to a private company to prove their identity when buying a house.
