However, not all of them were credible, despite the fact that at \u201cfirst glance\u201d they could indeed appear realistic and authentic to the average reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis image should be shown to the Montenegrin Special Prosecutor, Mr. Novovic, and to the heads of the Montenegrin, supposedly reformed police, this morning,\u201d reads, among other things, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=10164057217364917&amp;set=pcb.10164057231109917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/ghostarchive.org\/archive\/HJPw4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">archived here<\/a>) we identified. The post contains a photograph showing the now-deposed president of Venezuela, wearing a white shirt and a dark jacket, at the moment when he is being escorted out of an aircraft by two U.S. soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"634\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai-634x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai-634x1024-1.jpg 634w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai-634x1024-1-186x300.jpg 186w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The photograph went viral on other social networks as well, in different languages, a development already covered by colleagues from fact-checking portals such as <a href=\"https:\/\/maldita.es\/malditobulo\/20260105\/foto-detencion-maduro-dea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maldita<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cinjenice.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.927L363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AFP<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.istinomer.rs\/facebook-provere\/mrezama-kruzi-ai-fotografija-hapsenja-nikolasa-madura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Istinomer<\/a>\u2026&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/jan\/05\/maduro-venezuela-ai-images\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTDKbhflVRO\/?igsh=ZzM5YjRhcWdiZG1w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/ghostarchive.org\/archive\/Uk1Wx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">archived here<\/a>) that on January 3, the photograph was also published by Vince Lago, the mayor of Coral Gables (Florida), accompanied by a comment describing the president of Venezuela as the \u201cleader of a narco-terrorist organization that threatens our country.\u201d Lago\u2019s post received more than 1,500 likes and was still active at the time of writing this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai2-768x377-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai2-768x377-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai2-768x377-1-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The photograph was also published by some Montenegrin media outlets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdm.me\/svijet\/planeta\/siri-se-fotografija-hapsenja-madura-ne-zna-se-da-li-je-autenticna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/bizniscg.me\/siri-se-fotografija-hapsenja-madura-ne-zna-se-da-li-je-autenticna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.me\/svijet\/siri-se-fotografija-hapsenja-madura-ne-zna-se-da-li-je-autenticna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a>) (archived here:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ghostarchive.org\/archive\/b9x8L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/ghostarchive.org\/archive\/NueDv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/ghostarchive.org\/archive\/11H4P\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a>) with a clearly stated disclaimer that the authenticity of the image had not been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same photograph was shared on the&nbsp;X (<a href=\"https:\/\/ghostarchive.org\/archive\/uRAgr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">archived here<\/a>) by the leader of the Movement for Changes (PzP), Nebojsa Medojevic, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NebojsaMedojevi\/status\/2008109052140630436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on his account<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"712\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai3-712x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai3-712x1024-1.jpg 712w, https:\/\/seecheck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/madai3-712x1024-1-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As our colleagues have already established, the photograph is not real but <strong>was computer-generated<\/strong>, as indicated by AI-content detection tools as well as by numerous inconsistencies visible in the image itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the photograph was not published by any U.S. agency, official, or credible media outlet. According to online searches, it was originally shared from <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/San_live\/status\/2007386841390215226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an account on the X platform<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/ghostarchive.org\/archive\/uFs1t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">archived here<\/a>), that is otherwise known for creating content using artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis image that I made using AI has gone viral around the world,\u201d the account holder later wrote beneath the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cinjenice.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.927L363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AFP<\/a>&nbsp;analyzed the image using the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.google\/models\/synthid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SynthID<\/a>, tool, which assessed that \u201cmost or all of the image was generated or edited using Google AI tools, as it contains a digital SynthID watermark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further evidence that the photograph is not authentic lies in the fact that it does not match an image of Maduro on a military ship, which was also published on January 3 by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/n1info.rs\/svet\/tramp-objavio-fotografiju-madura-na-putu-ka-sad-foto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald&nbsp;Trump<\/a> on his Truth Social account. In that image, the former leader of Venezuela looks different (he has greying hair rather than dark hair) and is wearing a tracksuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/venezuela-us-military-strikes-maduro-trump\/#post-update-c5fe6542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS&nbsp;News-u<\/a>, unidentified sources within the U.S. military stated that Maduro was captured by Delta Force, an elite U.S. Army counter-terrorism unit, rather than by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), whose insignia appears on the uniform of one of the soldiers in the disputed photograph that is the subject of this analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all of the above reasons, social media posts containing the disputed photograph are rated as fake news.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cFake news\u201d rating is given to an original media report (completely produced by the media that published it) that contains factually incorrect claims or information.
