The portal Pozitivna Srpska fabricated a news story about Donald Trump\u2019s response, which was later republished by Dijaspora BiH, and then the disinformation spread across social media.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media users shared (archived here<\/a> and here<\/a>) a news item titled \u201cTrump Shocks with Statement on Srebrenica\u201d, originally published on the Pozitivna Srpska portal on November 14 of this year (archived here<\/a> and here<\/a>), and then, three days later, republished on the Dijaspora BiH portal (archived here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump<\/strong>, during a regular address, answered a question about the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Allegedly, a journalist of Bosnian origin asked him for his opinion on the situation in the Balkans, mentioning the Srebrenica genocide, to which Trump supposedly responded<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWait, let me answer you. We are talking about Srebrenica where Muslims brutally killed Christians for three years. You are talking about that Srebrenica? You know, there has long been a narrative in which, unfortunately, America played a key role, where Bosnian Muslims are the victims, and everyone else is the bad guys. You suffered, and no one denies that, but you must also consider other victims. To talk about genocide in Srebrenica without mentioning that Christian people were being killed there for three full years is hypocritical, don\u2019t you agree? And why should we hide it, we need to finally tell the truth, the verdict on genocide was made by a political court in The Hague, a court formed solely to judge one side.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This news is entirely fabricated. U.S. President Donald Trump has never made such a statement, nor has he responded to a question about Bosnia and Herzegovina with emphasis on Srebrenica and the genocide there. Internet searches do not produce this news in any credible source. Official White House records also show no evidence that Donald Trump ever spoke about Srebrenica (archived here<\/a> and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only instances linking Trump to Srebrenica are unrelated older news items, such as a 2016 report noting that the mayor of Srebrenica was invited to the traditional so called Congressional Prayer Breakfast, an event attended by U.S. presidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No direct statements by Donald Trump regarding Srebrenica can be found except for those fabricated ones shared by Facebook users. The same conclusion was reached by the fact-checking portal Raskrinkavanje, in an article titled \u201cClickbait with a Made-Up Story About Trump \u2018Explaining\u2019 Srebrenica\u201d<\/a>, which emphasized that \u201cthe only news in which Trump and Srebrenica appear together is nearly ten years old\u201d and that \u201cthere is no shocking statement or answer to a journalist\u2019s question about Srebrenica.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
