<\/strong>The Hungarian prime minister was speaking about forcing Ukraine to reopen the Druzhba oil pipeline. The claim that he declared war is false.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 5, 2026, a Facebook post<\/a> was shared claiming that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n was \u201cdeclaring war on Ukraine.\u201d The post included a short video of Orb\u00e1n\u2019s speech with English subtitles. In the video, Orb\u00e1n says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026And we will win by force. We have political and financial means, and we will use them to force them, unconditionally and as soon as possible, to reopen the Druzhba pipeline. I want it to be clear that we will win here and that we will win by force. I will not make a deal, there will be no compromise, we will defeat them. We will break the oil blockade. We will force the Ukrainians to resume deliveries. Not through business, not through an agreement, but by force.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The claim that \u201cOrb\u00e1n is declaring war on Ukraine\u201d was also shared<\/a> by other users on the same social network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Fabricated Declaration of War<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The video that was shared in our region as \u201cOrb\u00e1n\u2019s declaration of war on Ukraine\u201d originates from the platform X. It was posted<\/a> on March 5, 2026, on the account of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a>. The description of the post states that there will be \u201cno agreement or compromise\u201d and that the \u201cUkrainian oil blockade will be broken by force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a speech at an event<\/a> organized by the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry<\/a>, Orb\u00e1n issued a series of threats directed at Ukraine, which were reported the same day by international news agencies. On March 5, Reuters reported<\/a> that Orb\u00e1n said Hungary would use \u201cpolitical and financial tools\u201d to force Ukraine to reopen the key Druzhba oil pipeline<\/a> (also known as the \u201cFriendship\u201d pipeline), which transports Russian oil to Hungarian and Slovak refineries. The pipeline had not been operational since January 2026. According to Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal<\/a>, it was severely damaged on January 27 following a Russian attack in western Ukraine. Authorities in Hungary and Slovakia believe<\/a> the pipeline has been blocked for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While noting that Orb\u00e1n did say Hungary would \u201cwin, and win by force,\u201d Reuters also reported the following statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/em>\u201cWe do not have military force for this, I can assure everyone that this is not part of our plans. But we do have political and financial tools,\u201d he added, without providing further details.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Orb\u00e1n\u2019s remarks were also reported by media outlets<\/a> and agencies<\/a> in Serbia, citing an article<\/a> by the Hungarian outlet Index.hu, which likewise stated that Orb\u00e1n emphasized Hungary has \u201cpolitical, not military means\u201d to force Ukraine to unblock the pipeline. According to these sources, Orb\u00e1n also stressed that \u201cHungary must avoid being drawn into war over the next four years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a longer version<\/a> of the same speech available online, Orb\u00e1n explicitly states that military action against Ukraine is not part of the plan to force Ukraine to restart the Druzhba pipeline. However, this statement is not included in the shorter clip<\/a> that Orb\u00e1n shared on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The threatening tone of Orb\u00e1n\u2019s statements in the shared clip is reinforced by dramatic music and visuals of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, which appear as Orb\u00e1n delivers the remarks. Although it is clearly an edited video designed to project the image of a decisive, uncompromising leader willing to use force, Orb\u00e1n does not speak about war in his X post, does not declare war on Ukraine, and does not mention any such plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
