He made the statement during a meeting with Simon Golobič, a private archivist of Slovenian folk-pop music.

Ethnomusicologist David Verbuč of the Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana told Razkrinkavanje.si that Slovenia has many institutions, associations and initiatives whose core activities include preserving, archiving, researching, promoting and publishing various forms of musical heritage. He stressed that most of them are state institutions or operate with state support.

Verbuč said that “in terms of research and preservation of musical heritage in Slovenia, all musical fields are very well covered”. The focus is on folk, classical and sacral music, while in recent decades popular music and minority musical traditions have also received increased attention.

He explained that several institutions are involved in preserving musical heritage, from research bodies operating within the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the University of Ljubljana, to organisations responsible for the promotion, production and archiving of music, including the Slovenian Music Information Centre, the Society of Slovenian Composers and the Public Fund for Cultural Activities.

In his view, Logar’s statement is misleading and lacks professional grounding, as “Logar unfortunately does not take into account the findings of the profession and the actual activities in the field of researching and preserving musical heritage in Slovenia”.

We have also contacted several major cultural institutions about specific projects they have carried out in the field musical heritage preservation.

The National and University Library (NUK) said it has been continuously digitising musical material for more than twenty years and ensuring the long-term preservation and accessibility of sound recordings. Its music collection, established in 1948, now comprises more than 300,000 units related to Slovenian musical heritage.

By 2022 they had digitised more than 3,500 gramophone records and audio cassettes, while also maintaining an extensive collection of more than 25,000 items of Slovenian music publications. In addition, NUK collects mandatory deposit copies of music publications and manuscripts by Slovenian creators, ensuring the preservation of the full spectrum of Slovenia’s musical heritage.

The Slovenian Ethnographic Museum has been preserving musical heritage since its establishment and has stepped up these activities in recent decades. In 2006 it added a section on folk music to its permanent collection, and it has organised several exhibitions highlighting Slovenian musical heritage.

Since 2011, the museum has also served as the national coordinator for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. This includes collecting initiatives, preparing expert documentation and proposals, and coordinating the inclusion of musical heritage elements in the national register. Since 2012, various forms of folk music, instrumental folk performance, singing, traditional instruments and specific musical practices such as folk-pop music, tamburitza playing, the singing of partisan songs, and jazz performance have been added to the register.

Mojca Kovačič, head of the Institute of Ethnomusicology at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, said that preserving cultural heritage is the institute’s core professional mission and does not depend on political measures. Its work includes collecting materials, digitising manuscript, audio and visual collections, organising archives and facilitating public access. She stressed that these activities are continuous and allow the wider public to access digitised materials.

We have informed Anže Logar of our findings and will publish his response once we have received it.

The claim that nothing has been done to preserve musical cultural heritage since Slovenia’s independence is false. Data from public institutions, archives and research organisations show decades of active collecting, archiving and digitising of Slovenian musical heritage.

Original article (in Slovenian) was published on 14/4/2026; Author: Aljaž Primožič David Verbuč of the Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana stressed that Slovenia has a very good system for preserving and researching national musical culture.
