In the analyzed post, she was called the “granddaughter” of notorious Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. However, this is disinformation that circulated on social media several years ago and which Raskrinkavanje already addressed in an analysis published on May 5, 2021. As explained in that analysis, Angela Merkel’s family tree is thoroughly documented and publicly available, clearly showing that she is not related to Hitler in any way.

One of the best-known and most influential decisions of her political career was opening Germany’s borders to more than one million refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and other Middle Eastern countries in 2015 during her third term in office. Several years later, under considerable political pressure, Merkel somewhat tightened her migration policy (1, 2).

Despite this, Merkel frequently opposed Islamophobic narratives in her public statements, saying that “Islam is part of Germany” and that it “is not the source of terrorism”, and emphasizing that cooperation with Islamic countries is crucial in the fight against terrorism (1, 2).Accordingly, we assess the earliest post attributing comments about “Muslim streets red with blood”, Muslims “fleeing” from Mecca toward Europe as migrants, and unjust poverty among Muslims to Angela Merkel as fake news.
