Energy prices – and subsequently prices of other goods – rose globally, with some countries facing potential shortages. The inability to export fertiliser has also raised concerns about global food production.

Due to the impact on the global and domestic economy, U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly made reopening the Strait of Hormuz one of his key objectives throughout the conflict, urging NATO allies to assist and later suggesting joint control of the passage with Iran. Although the two countries declared a military ceasefire, tensions over the strait have continued, with Iran claiming it is open only to vessels from friendly nations that must pay a transit fee, while Trump this week allegedly declared a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

As diplomatic efforts continue to resolve the conflict during the ceasefire, the waterway remains under heavy military surveillance, with ongoing risks of escalation that could have severe consequences for global energy supply and security.

The significant military presence in the region, both on land bases and at sea, has contributed to the spread of misinformation related to the conflict on social media. A Facebook user shared a video on April 12 (archived here) allegedly showing a fire on a U.S. Navy warship in the Strait of Hormuz:

“U.S. warship on fire #Strait of Hormuz”

AI-generated video of an aircraft carrier fire

Although the footage may initially appear authentic and seem to show the largest U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, on fire, the video is not real and was generated using artificial intelligence.

According to colleagues at the Spanish fact-checking outlet Newtral, several indicators suggest the video is AI-generated: at the beginning of the clip, a burning structure appears and then disappears; water jets intended to extinguish the fire do not make contact with the ship; figures appearing on deck lack clear outlines and show no movement; and the motion of the water appears artificial.

It is worth noting that a fire did occur aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford last month, but it was unrelated to any combat operations. According to a statement released by the U.S. Navy, on March 12 a fire broke out in the ship’s main laundry area while it was operating in the Red Sea in support of military operations against Iran.

“The cause of the fire was not related to combat operations and has already been brought under control,” the statement said, adding that “there was no damage to the propulsion system and the aircraft carrier remains fully operational.” The Red Sea is located on the opposite side of the Persian Gulf from the Strait of Hormuz.

The largest U.S. warship also visited Split

Approximately ten days after the fire, the aircraft carrier docked in Greece and later visited Split at the end of March this year. According to the U.S. Navy, routine logistical work and minor repairs were carried out during its stopovers, while more complex technical work – including repairs related to the fire – had already been completed earlier at a specialised military base outside Croatia.

As reported by CNN, the ship may soon break the record for the longest foreign deployment of a U.S. aircraft carrier since the Vietnam War. The USS Gerald R. Ford departed the U.S. state of Virginia in June last year, operated in the Mediterranean Sea and Norway, and later participated in operations related to the alleged detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, before being deployed to the Caribbean and subsequently to the Middle East in support of operations against Iran.

After the fire, the carrier docked in Greece and Croatia, and according to a vessel tracking website is now located in the Atlantic Ocean west of Morocco. CNN reports that the record-breaking deployment is expected to end in May.

Had a U.S. warship actually been hit in the Strait of Hormuz, it would undoubtedly have been widely reported by credible media outlets as a major development in the U.S.–Israeli conflict with Iran. However, no such reports exist, as the USS Gerald R. Ford was not struck or damaged in the Strait of Hormuz.

In conclusion, the video allegedly showing a U.S. aircraft carrier on fire in the Strait of Hormuz was generated using artificial intelligence. Several clear indicators point to synthetic creation, including water jets failing to reach the ship and inconsistent motion in the scene. In addition, there are no credible media reports confirming any such incident involving a U.S. warship in the Strait of Hormuz.

Original article (in Croatian) was published on 15/4/2026; Author: Ivan Nekić While the United States and Iran are attempting to negotiate an agreement to end the war, social media has been flooded with claims about events that did not actually happen.
