Claim: Biden stated that NATO desires to include Belarus in the Alliance

Verdict: False

Social media users have shared a video from the US presidential debate held on June 27 in Atlanta, alleging that President Joe Biden said NATO aims to admit Belarus.

Biden: ‘Belarus is our preferred NATO country’the post claims.

The video prominently displays the logo of the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti and is titled in Russian, suggesting possible manipulation.

In the video, Biden discusses Russian leader Vladimir Putin, calling him a war criminal, but he does not mention Belarus as NATO’s favored country.

Furthermore, in his full speech, there is no reference to such a statement.  Specifically, the U.S. president emphasizes: ‘The fact is that Putin is a war criminal. He has killed thousands and thousands of people, and he made it clear that he wants to rebuild what was part of the Soviet Union, not just a part.  He wants all of Ukraine.

This is his intention. And do you think he will stop there?  Do you think he will cease if he obtains Ukraine? What do you foresee happening with Poland, with Belarus? What do you anticipate for those NATO countries?

This involves a manipulation of Biden’s words aimed at influencing Russian domestic opinion, implying that NATO is seeking to enter territories traditionally viewed as part of Russia’s sphere of influence.
