At the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly, the members voted against a draft resolution combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism, and other practices, have concluded that Russia, one of the initiators of the draft, abuses the battle against Nazism and denazification to justify its aggression against Ukraine.
The portal Insajder published on 7 November a piece entitled They spit on Slovenian anti-fascism: Disgrace for the Golob government, Slovenia against the condemnation of glorification of Nazism at the UN. The report stated that on 4 November Slovenia voted at the UN General Assembly against a draft resolution combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism, and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance.
The draft was submitted by Russia along with 16 countries and it states that the UN members recognize the suffering of the victims of these practices. It also determines that neo-Nazism is not just the glorification of the historical movement but a contemporary phenomenon that strongly emphasizes racial inequality and superiority.
The draft was not supported by 52 of the 193 UN members, including Slovenia, and 15 abstained. On behalf of the EU and candidacy country Ukraine, Czech Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhánek explained at the session that the Union strongly condemns abuse of the fight against Nazism and rejects the inappropriate application of the term denazification, which Russia uses to justify its inhumane and unlawful aggression against Ukraine.
“The EU has pleaded for years that the fight against extremism and the condemnation of the despicable ideology of Nazism must not be misused and co-opted for politically motivated purposes that seek to excuse new violations and abuses of human rights,” he said. Because the European Union is committed to the global fight against racism, xenophobia, antisemitism and intolerance, EU member states decided to vote against the resolution.
The representative of Russia told the meeting that the authors of the draft wanted to add a paragraph to the original version that takes into consideration a report of a special UN rapporteur for human rights. She determined that Russia was trying to justify the aggression on Ukraine by invoking the fight against neo-Nazism. She also held that the use of neo-Nazism as a pretext for justifying territorial aggression undermined genuine attempts to fight neo-Nazism.
