The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs clarified that Minister Tanja Fajon “has not visited Iran during her term, neither in an official nor in an unofficial capacity.”

Mojca Škrinjar, former MP for the Democratic Party (SDS) and current president of the party’s senior citizens’ club, shared a post on social media platform X on June 18 in which an Israeli user claimed that “Iran is executing innocent political prisoners –  people whose only ‘crime’ is daring to criticize the regime.” The post was accompanied by a photo of six individuals with covered heads awaiting execution by hanging.

In her repost, she added: “Knowing this, how could Tanja Fajon have gone to Iran? When the Iranian regime collapses, we’ll know everything.”

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs explained that Minister Fajon “has not visited Iran during her term, neither in an official nor in an unofficial capacity,” but she has met with representatives of the Iranian Foreign Ministry at international events in recent years. She last met with current Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on November 26 last year at the end of a multilateral event in Portugal, and with Araghchi’s predecessor Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in January 2024 at the conclusion of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and on September 28, 2022, during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

By reverse image searching the photo from the Israeli user’s post shared by Škrinjar, we determined that it matches a scene of a public hanging from the 1968 film Hang ’Em High. The photo reposted by the former MP is cropped to show four of the six individuals being hanged. This match is further confirmed by a partial inscription on a building in the upper right corner of the image, consistent with the film scene.

In June 2022, Razkrinkavanje.si verified another post shared by Škrinjar on social media platforms Facebook and X (then still known as Twitter). We labelled that post as fake.

Although the Israeli user later deleted her post, Škrinjar’s repost and comment remain online.

We informed Škrinjar of our findings and will publish her response once we have received it.

According to the Razkrinkavanje.si methodology, we label Škrinjar’s post as fake.
