Politicians in Montenegro often trigger waves of disinformation through their statements and posts on social networks, while media outlets which, to a greater or lesser extent, share their views continue the cycle of misleading the public.

Such a wave of manipulation was launched by Nebojsa Medojevic, who brought into the public sphere an alleged statement by the President of the Association of Demographers and Statisticians, Gordana Radojevic, which he misused in order to claim that the “mass influx of migrants from Turkey and other Islamic states into Montenegro is the policy of the Government of Montenegro.”

“MASS INFLUX OF MIGRANTS FROM TURKEY AND OTHER ISLAMIC STATES INTO MONTENEGRO, THE POLICY OF THE GOVERNMENT OF MONTENEGRO!!!

“So, based on the data released by the Association of Demographers and Statisticians, and based on what we can see in the capital of Montenegro or Budva, it can be concluded that the domestic Slavic population of Montenegro is emigrating while Turkish and other Muslim migrants are massively settling in Montenegro. However, we have now learned that this is the program and organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro under the leadership of Ervin Ibrahimovic, president of the Bosniak Party (which programmatically represents Islamic extremist positions), with the aim of increasing the percentage of the Islamic population in relation to the domestic majority Christian population of Montenegro, and that such a policy is approved by the Government of Montenegro. Namely, Montenegro is left to the liberal Muslim migration policy of the Muslim Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the approval of the Prime Minister, in which Muslims occupy a disproportionately higher number of ministries compared to the number of the Muslim population in Montenegro, but nevertheless Muslim ministers work on changing the state of the religious majority of the population of Montenegro, and when they achieve the percentage of one-third Muslim population, the scenario of North Macedonia, Kosovo and Metohija, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Syria, which was once a completely Christian Mediterranean state, will follow…”

Dr Gordana Radojevic, President of the Association of Demographers and Statisticians of Montenegro,” Medojevic published on his Instagram account, adding to all this a “screenshot” of a YouTube video from Gordana Radojevic’s appearance on Newsmax television.

This was followed by the dissemination of this “statement” by Gordana Radojevic on the portals Borba, Politika, Aloonline…

These media outlets claim that Radojevic announced a “mission of Muslim migration,” that she said that the Minister of Foreign Affairs “Ibrahimovic is implementing a program of settling Muslims with the approval of the Government of Montenegro,” and that she “raises the alarm that the authorities in Podgorica are carrying out a plan of settling Muslims to change the demographic picture.” All of this is claimed in the headlines of these three portals, while the texts state almost the same as in Medojevic’s post.

Gordana Radojevic’s appearance on Newsmax is available on YouTube, and whoever watches it from beginning to end will clearly see that neither Medojevic nor the three portals that wrote about her analysis for Newsmax are speaking, or rather writing, the truth.

At no point does Radojevic mention what the former MP, Politika, Borba and Alo Online published, i.e., she does not speak about the religious affiliation of immigrants.

She confirmed this in a statement for Raskrinkavanje.

“I have never stated, nor have I ever, as president of the Association of Demographers and Statisticians of Montenegro, announced the claims attributed to me in this post. I have never used religious affiliation as a basis for conclusions in my analyses. The text is falsely attributed to me. Because of the dissemination of falsehoods, I will report the case to the police and competent authorities,” Radojevic told us, adding that she will request an urgent correction and removal of the post.

In the Newsmax TV program, Radojevic spoke about the impact of the latest census results, that Montenegro records a negative migration balance, with more people leaving than coming into the country, that according to the census 46,878 foreign citizens live in Montenegro, but that there are discrepancies with earlier data from the Ministry of the Interior, which indicated that the real number could be closer to 100,000, as well as that if current trends continue, foreign citizens could make up to 50 percent of Montenegro’s population.

Speaking about immigrants, she said: “We see an increase in the number of immigrants from Azerbaijan and Turkey who find their place of work and life here. Of course, the visa regime is within the scope of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; it is harmonized with the policy of the European Union, but short-term and seasonal deviations are possible due to tourist needs and the labor market,” she said.

Thus, there is no mention of a “mission of Muslim migration,” nor that “Ibrahimovic is implementing a program of settling Muslims.”

Because of all the above, the posts are rated as fake news.

The “Fake news” rating is given to an original media report (completely produced by the media that published it) that contains factually incorrect claims or information. Content that is rated as fake news can be reliably determined to have been created and disseminated with the intent to misinform the public, that is, to present a completely false claim as fact.
