Mladen Borovič, a lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, University of Maribor, said the image was “very likely created using artificial intelligence tools”.

A Facebook user shared a post on March 28 featuring an image of the front page of the daily Delo bearing the headline: “Young people left without a bright future because of pensioners who voted for corrupt freedom.” The user added a caption to the image saying that “now that the election is over, they can publish the truth”.

The post was shared 87 times and received 22 likes. Comments on the shared posts indicate that users did not recognise the content as being generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

We checked the authenticity of the image using Hive Moderation, a tool designed to detect AI-generated content, which calculated a 99.9% probability that the image had been created using AI.

Another image verification tool, Image Whisperer, assessed the image as AI-generated with a probability of 98%. One of the sub-models used in the Image Whisperer analysis indicated a 100% probability that the image had been created using ChatGPT.

Borut Batagelj, an assistant at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana, told Razkrinkavanje.si he had noticed “quite a few flaws” in the image, most notably in the text and visual details. He said the strongest proof whether the image had been generated by artificial intelligence was whether Delo actually published an issue with such a front page.

The front page of Delo dated 28 March does not match the image shared in the post. On that day the newspaper’s front page carried a story about the start of repairs following damage caused across much of Slovenia this year by a storm with strong winds. In the circulated image, the year of publication is written in Roman numerals, whereas Delo uses Arabic numerals. The issue number (136) shown on the purported front page does not correspond to the chronological sequence of the newspaper’s actual publications this year.

Mladen Borovič, a lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, University of Maribor, said the image was “very likely created using artificial intelligence tools”, specifically a tool that is part of the ChatGPT model. He pointed to inconsistencies in the barcode and the typeface beneath the Delo masthead, spelling errors and characters that are not used in Slovenian, as well as blurred text.

Because we were unable to contact the Facebook user and no other contact details were available online, we approached the local chapter of the Slovenian Democratic Party in Kobarid, where a person with the same name stood as a candidate in the 2022 local elections. She did not respond, but the post has since been deleted.

Under the methodology used by Razkrinkavanje.si, we rate the post as fake.
