Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić said on the American television Newsmax that over 70% of citizens in Serbia support US President Donald Trump. Speaking about Trump’s “extreme popularity”, the minister refers to Gallup, an American analytics company that conducts public opinion surveys. However, FakeNews Tragač received a clear answer from this company that the information is not theirs. In a study by an organization with a similar name and activity – Gallup International Association – we found information that 44% of respondents from Serbia actually have a “very unfavorable opinion” of Donald Trump.
Marko Đurić first praised the American president’s recent speech on the state of the nation, and then referred to the reputation this president supposedly enjoys in Serbia:
“By the way, President Trump is extremely popular in Serbia in comparison with all other European countries. According to Gallup’s polls he is polling so high in Serbia that, despite the fact that we are relatively popular as government in Serbia, but we are almost jealous of the support level President Trump enjoys in our country – it’s in the high seventies, so it’s above the support level even, even for our government.”
The Gallup regularly published its global “approval of American leadership” surveys, in which it examined the affection of citizens of other countries towards the current leadership of the United States of America. The last publicly available survey during Donald Trump’s presidency is from 2021, and includes data from 2020. At that time, the support of the citizens of Serbia for the American “leadership” was 16%. In the introductory part of this document, the observation was made that “the evaluations of the American leadership have gone in a negative direction only in three countries”, including Serbia.
We got in touch with Gallup to check if they have the information referred to by Minister Đurić in his guest appearance, and here is what they told us:
“The data you provided are not from Gallup, and we do not measure support for Trump in Serbia. We generally measure the approval of Serbs for the American leadership” – Gallup wrote us. At the same time they forwarded us the freshest data for the year 2025. 1,000 Serbian citizens took part in the survey and answered the question whether they approve or disapprove of the work of the United States leadership. Here are the results:
| Approves | Disapproves | Don’t know/refuses to answer |
| 19% | 56% | 25% |
Although there has been a 3% increase in the approval category during Trump’s second term, the approval rate is still not even close to what the our Minister of Foreign Affairs said.
The results of the research of the association Gallup International
However, a global public opinion polling organization with a similar name, Gallup International Association, published the results of its own study at the end of last year. It shows how the citizens of certain countries of the world perceive “the most prominent contemporary global leaders”, including the US President Donald Trump. Below we present the findings for Serbia:
| Country | Very favorable opinion | Mostly favorable opinion | Mostly unfavorable opinion | Very unfavorable opinion | Don’t know | Net result |
| Serbia | 4% | 22% | 26% | 44% | 5% | -44% |
Only 4% of respondents from Serbia expressed a “very favorable opinion” in the survey, while 44% of them had a “very unfavorable opinion” of American President Donald Trump. As we can see in the table, the net result is minus 44%. In order to further put this information into context, we will draw attention to two more data from the research. Unlike Trump, the Serbian public positively perceives Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose net result for 2025 was 37 percent. The citizens of Serbia expressed a somewhat lower, but still positive impression, of Chinese President Xi Jinping, with a net result of 22 percent.
We also contacted the association Gallup International, from where they directed us to researchers who, as their members, conducted both surveys mentioned in this analysis (US Election 2024 and End-of-year Survey 2026) in Serbia. In their response, they stated that none of those two studies “showed the level of support” that Minister Đurić is talking about.
Research results during the 2024 US election campaign
Statistics that are somewhat closer to Minister Đurić’s data were found only in a survey conducted during the American election campaign in 2024. It was implemented in most European countries, and one of the two polls included a hypothetical voting scenario in which respondents decided whether they would rather vote for the Republican Party candidate Donald Trump or the Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris. In Serbia, the survey was conducted by Gallup International, and more than half of the respondents (59%) answered that in this hypothetical scenario they would vote for Trump.
It is a specific survey conducted during the election campaign and with a strictly binary choice, which is why it is incorrect to interpret its results as a measure of the general popularity of a political actor.
