A post circulating on social media, including Albanian-language platforms, presents a scandalous profile of the new Hungarian prime minister, Peter Magyar. This portrayal seeks to cast doubt on the values of Western democracies that welcomed his historic victory in the April 12 elections.

The post above is made up of a combination of facts mixed with speculation, exaggeration, and inaccuracies.

It is true that Magyar first came to prominence in politics in February 2024, when he published a secret recording he had made of his wife, Judit Varga, the former Minister of Justice in the Orbán government. The recording showed that Hungary’s president, Katalin Novák, had granted a presidential pardon in April 2023 to Endre Kónya, the deputy director of a state-run children’s home near Budapest. Kónya had forced children to cover up sexual abuse by his superior, János Vásárhelyi, the director of the children’s home.

It is also true that Magyar and Varga divorced in 2023, after 14 years of marriage.

However, the claim that “during the divorce proceedings, police reports revealed that Magyar regularly abused his wife and used drugs and alcohol” remains unproven.

The accusations against Magyar were made public by his former wife, a minister, amid a political dispute and a custody battle following their divorce. In March 2024, the same day Magyar released another audio recording of a conversation with his ex-wife, Judit Varga, she posted two statements on Facebook accusing him of verbal and physical abuse throughout their marriage. She also said that the statements she made in the published recording had been made under pressure during an interaction with Magyar in which she felt threatened.

Later that evening, in an interview, Varga gave further details about her allegations, saying that on several occasions Magyar had locked her in a room without her consent, pushed her against a door while she was pregnant, and walked around their shared apartment holding a knife. She further claimed that he once staged a suicide attempt, but when emergency services arrived, he left in his pajamas, forcing her to deal with the situation.

According to a December 2020 police report published by the pro-government magazine Mandiner, Magyar acted in an aggressive, threatening, and intimidating way toward his wife and police officers when she tried to take their children with the assistance of officers serving as bodyguards due to Varga’s position. An intense argument broke out in their home, and Magyar allegedly tried to prevent her from going to a second residence where the children were, claiming that the police were attempting to kidnap them. He tried to film the incident on his phone but was stopped by police. In the end, Magyar returned home, while Varga took the children to their grandparents.

After the divorce, another former partner, Evelin Vogel, also accused Magyar of aggressive behavior in 2024.

In 2025, Hungarian media outlet Index published allegations that, in 2023, Magyar may have been involved in questionable stock trading. The report said that on Friday, July 21, 2023, after the stock market closed, Opus Global Nyrt. announced a share buyback program that significantly increased its stock price. On the same day at 3:00 p.m., before the market closed and before the announcement, Peter Magyar reportedly sold all his other shares and purchased Opus shares worth tens of millions of forints. It was also noted that at the time, Magyar served on the supervisory board of MBH, a bank linked to Lőrinc Mészáros, and that Opus is also associated with Mészáros. However, there is no official investigation into these claims to date.

In February 2026, a website suddenly surfaced under the name of Márk Radnai, deputy chairman of Magyar’s Tisza party. The site, which Radnai denies creating, featured a black-and-white image of a bedroom and the phrase “coming soon,” prompting speculation about a potentially compromising recording being released.

On February 12, one day after the website was launched, Magyar released a video message in which he described himself as the target of a covert operation involving his former girlfriend.

Magyar moved quickly to pre-empt the situation, accusing the ruling Fidesz party of preparing to release a secretly recorded and potentially manipulated video of him in an intimate setting with a former partner.

According to Magyar, he had been invited to a gathering by his former partner Evelin Vogel in a rented apartment. Although they were no longer together, they ended up having consensual sexual relations. He stated that when he arrived, several people were already present and there was “alcohol and something that looked like drugs” on a table. However, he insisted he did not consume either. He urged Fidesz to publish the full, unedited recording to demonstrate that no illegal activity had taken place. The recording itself has not been made public.

On March 23, 2026, Magyar announced that he had passed a drug test conducted by an Austrian laboratory. He said that hair testing can detect drug use over a long period of time and added that he would release the results once he received them.
